When the Yvette Landry Band plays the Blue Moon Friday night, she'll bring with her a history of country music that she didn't know was in her.

"I never intended to write music, and then when I did, that's what came out," says Landry, whose parents were fans of the country sound. "I listened to country music growing  up - old country music: Willie, and Ronnie, and George Jones, John Conley - all those old guys.

"I really liked it," she says. "But I didn't sit down one day and say, 'Hey, I'm going to write country music. It's just what came out."

The Breaux Bridge native, who was earned "Best Country/Folk Album" and "Best Country/Folk Artist" categories in Offbeat's Best of the Beat 2011 awards.

The Landry band consists of Richard Comeaux, steel guitar; Dr. Joseph Butts, upright bass; and Landry's son Trevor Landry, drums.

"You can expect a lot of original numbers a lot of old country - Patsy Kline, George Jones - just pure-D honky-tonk," she says.

Landry isn't one for labels when it comes to her music.

"I'd say it falls under country/Americana - if you had to categorize it - that's where it would fall," she says. "Mostly on the old school country vein."

Another country musician with bluegrass leanings, Brennen Leigh, opens the show.
