Zach helps celebrate 200th

At the State Capitol Monday, a ceremony was held commemorating the Pelican State's bicentennial that included music, cake, and speeches by well-known natives.

In the music category, according to the Advocate, Scott's Zachary Richard sang what he said was “the oldest song in the considerable repertoire of Louisiana music” from the early days of Natchitoches.

In addition, Deacon John sang “America the Beautiful” and Irma Thomas and Jay Chevalier combined on “You Are My Sunshine.”

Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne led the ceremonies, including the unveiling of a Forever Stamp by the U.S. Postal Service. It is a Atchafalya Swamp scene by photographer C.C. Lockwood and is on sale now.

Louisiana became a state April 30, 1812. Bicentennial events continue throughout the year.
