LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Justice has asked a court to bar a New Iberia tax preparer and her business from preparing federal tax returns for others.
The civil complaint, filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana, alleges that Joyce Bougere-Keyes and her business, Joyce Tax & Financial Services LLC, prepares federal income tax returns for customers who report fabricated and/or inflated business income and expenses to maximize the amount of the Earned Income Tax Credit her customers claim.
The complaint also alleges Bougere-Keyes improperly claimed education credits for ineligible taxpayers.
It was not immediately known if Bougere-Keyes has an attorney.
Since 2009, the complaint says, Bougere-Keyes has prepared over 7,500 individual returns and the loss to the U.S. Treasury could exceed $1 million.
