Although Youngsville has had years of gloating its good fortune over us, as of today we, too, in Lafayette have our very own Rouses. It’s located on Bertrand Drive where Graham Central Station was until a few years ago.
What we know now as Rouses began as City Produce Market in Thibodaux in 1923. Now they have 36 locations throughout Louisiana and Mississippi.
This place is like a Homeric epic poem to the glories of groceries. It is a cross between a Fresh Market and a Whole Foods, and it’s local. Terrific selection of Indian and Asian groceries, a meat and seafood department with extensive and fresh selections, and sushi is made on site. Great selection as well of breads and cheeses, and they frequently have cooking demonstrations by local chefs where you can watch food prepared then sample it.
The best thing about Rouses is its commitment to purchasing Louisiana products and offering them at fair prices. Local farmers are contacted first and often the farm’s name and picture appear on the weekly flyer. You get the freshest choices from a local source so both your stomach and your pocketbook walk away happy. “From Louisiana and Mississippi farms, to Gulf Coast waters, if it’s grown, caught or made in this region, you’ll find it at Rouses,” says the press release.
