The late Leebob Cox wanted Gabe Bako at the helm of his iconic restaurant, but a split with Cox’s children has the La Fonda veteran setting up his own Tex-Mex concept a half mile up Johnston Street.

“I recall the times when we were visited by celebrities — actor Paul Newman, daredevil Evil Knievel, and beauty queen Ali Landry. But even more important than the occasional celebrity were our loyal customers who came week after week, month after month, generation after generation, even to the fourth and fifth generations. All of these have contributed to the warm, happy spirit of La Fonda — a spirit that I hope will live on into the next generation, and beyond.”
— Leebob Cox, from his 2007 book, The Spirit of La Fonda

It was 1968 and Gabe Bako did not like his new job in Lafayette.

Bako had worked alongside his father at four-star Café Budapest in Boston since the age of 14, starting out as a dishwasher and working his way up to waiter. When he was 18, the Hungarian immigrant was drafted into the U.S. Army and by age 19 was a mess sergeant at Fort Polk, a job he held for about a year.

He’d really taken a liking to the restaurant business and Louisiana, so after his service was up and at the urging of his wife, Mary, he’d applied at La Fonda. Bako’s background made him a good fit for the busy Tex-Mex eatery, and founder Leebob Cox hired him on the spot.

But La Fonda was not his style. “I did not like the atmosphere, the rowdiness,” Bako says. Unbeknownst to his employer, he applied at Restaurant Normandy in Lafayette (now Blue Dog Café) and got the job. He had to make a quick decision, and again, it was Mary’s influence that convinced him to stick it out with La Fonda.

As soon as Bako made the commitment to stay and settled in to the boisterous scene, Leebob seemed to take a special interest in his young waiter. A few years later, Bako recalls, Leebob said he wanted to join Bako for lunch outside of the restaurant. “I was going to Jacob’s restaurant [at Four Corners] for lunch at 11 o’clock and I got home at 7 p.m.,” Bako says.

“We talked about business, life, future, what his plans were. We just talked for a long time,” Bako says. At that meeting, Leebob made it clear that he saw Bako in La Fonda’s future. The young waiter was flattered; Leebob would soon after choose Bako to help him with the hosting duties.

In his 2007 book, The Spirit of La Fonda, Leebob explains the bond that continued to grow after the two became co-hosts, saying Bako’s responsibilities with the restaurant grew steadily over the next 15 to 20 years. “He assumed even greater responsibility in the mid-1990s when I had heart valve surgery to correct a murmur. So, I relied on him heavily, and I felt confident about his taking charge and operating La Fonda. Gabe has the imagination and sense of humor to take the restaurant where I wanted it to go. Additionally, he has been a loyal and honest partner. I have relied on him now for many years, and he has assumed his duties with fervor and dedication to the La Fonda family and ideals.”

“He was like my dad,” Bako says. “Leebob was my best friend, and partner, and boss. All of the above.”

Leebob made it clear in the book that Bako was his hand-picked successor; the restaurateur also expressed hope that his son Sherwood, who had spent many years working at La Fonda, would eventually take over from Bako. Two strokes over the next six years after his heart surgery meant Leebob was spending less and less time at the restaurant — and leaning more on Bako, who by this time was a minority partner.

Leebob died in February 2008. At the time of his father’s death, Sherwood had been out of the restaurant for several years and living out of state. Until his death, Leebob and Bako continued to work together, as business partners and friends, building a restaurant institution in Lafayette — one that 53 years after its inception is still as famous for its caricatures of well-known locals and potent margaritas as it is for hosting generations of families that have celebrated birthdays, engagements, anniversaries and all events in between. One that was the hottest spot in town during the oil boom and continued to thrive long after the bust of the mid-1980s.

But over the past nine months, that rich tradition has lived on without Gabe Bako.

While Gabe Bako developed close relationships with many of La Fonda’s customers over the years, he readily acknowledges most guests were more familiar with his serious side. He was the greeter and the seater — not one for much idle talk. “I’m focused,” Bako says. “When I’m working, I’m working.”

But today Independent photographer Robin May is seeing the other side of Bako, the sense of humor Leebob referenced in his book. He’s shown up for a photo shoot at the new restaurant he plans to open by November in shorts and flip-flops, and one of his two working partners in the new venture, Richard Dunbar, feigns embarrassment over Bako’s irreverence. Bako pretends to ignore Dunbar, and the joking escalates when two friends show up unannounced to see how the restaurant is progressing.

The teasing continues with Sylvia Lopez, another working partner, but it’s tempered. Clearly Bako and Dunbar are proud of the dishes she’s cooked and styled for the photo shoot. A native of Mexico, Lopez has been in Lafayette more than a dozen years, having worked at several local restaurants, including Mexican eateries (her husband, BTW, works at La Fonda). She’s in charge of hiring the kitchen staff, which is almost exclusively Mexican cooks experienced in authentic flavors and preparations.

It took some soul-searching for Bako to get to this point, to accept that his career would have to head in a new direction. “It’s like a divorce,” he says. In February of this year, after 43 years at the restaurant and by then a 50 percent owner (Leebob willed him 40 percent of the company, adding to the 10 percent ownership he’d acquired two decades ago), Gabe Bako’s tenure came to an abrupt end.

20110928-cover-0103
Richard Dunbar will assist Bako in the front of the house.

Troubles for Bako started brewing in mid-2010, he says, soon after Leebob’s daughter, Stephanie Cox Gagnard, moved back to Lafayette from Dallas and went to work at La Fonda. Stephanie and her brother, Sherwood, who still lives out of state, own the other half of La Fonda and share ownership of the Johnston Street building that houses it. In the beginning, Bako insists, he was happy when Stephanie said she wanted to work with him.

Though he would not be specific, Bako says Stephanie — who has no known restaurant experience — almost immediately wanted to make changes. La Fonda, he maintains, had continued to make money in the previous 2.5 years, despite the economic slowdown and an onslaught of new restaurant competitors. “That place is a machine,” he says.

Although Bako holds an equal interest in the restaurant, Stephanie and Sherwood have two votes on the board of directors of La Fonda Inc. Upon Leebob’s death, his widow named Bako president of La Fonda Inc., and Bako put Stephanie and Sherwood on the board, “per Leebob’s wishes,” according to Bako. He says Leebob had asked him if the three would be able to get along, and Bako assured him they would. Over the years, Bako made three failed attempts to buy Leebob out of the business, but the founder would always get cold feet. “Leebob and I went to the table three times, and each time he backed out,” Bako says with a chuckle. “He’d just change his mind.”

The final straw for Bako came Jan. 4 with Stephanie and Sherwood’s decision to fire Dunbar, who’d run the kitchen for nine years. Bako was extremely upset: “I told them I was going to take a few days off,” he says.

The conspicuous absence of the most visible face at the restaurant quickly led to lots of speculation and very few answers. “The status is that he’s on vacation,” longtime Office Manager Pat LeDoux told The Independent’s sister publication ABiz in a brief telephone interview Feb. 16. LeDoux made it clear that Stephanie was in the room while she was being interviewed and that she was passing along Stephanie’s comments. “There’s not much we can say right now. It’s out of our hands right now,” LeDoux added. The Independent has since learned that at that time the two parties had agreed to a short time frame in which they would not publicly discuss the matter.

Bako has since declined to discuss specifics about the legal battle, but records filed in state district court reveal that in a board of directors meeting the following day, Feb. 17, Bako was fired as president of La Fonda Inc. and general manager of the restaurant. (When the 200-word story “Where’s Gabe?” was published Feb. 23, the ABiz rack in the entrance to the restaurant mysteriously disappeared the day the papers were delivered. An unidentified female manager told our carrier the rack was “stolen.”)

Stephanie returned The Independent’s call last week, leaving a voice mail message. Reached on her cell phone Monday, she said she did not have time to talk; her attorney, Joe Giglio, did not return calls for comment.

When they fired Bako, Stephanie and Sherwood cut off all access to the restaurant’s books and the corporation’s records, according to court filings. That meant Bako had no idea how the restaurant’s sales were going, what Stephanie was paying herself as manager, what was in the business plan, who was being hired and fired, who was being promoted — and who was consulted when the decision was made to terminate him.

In August, Bako asked a judge to compel the corporation to open those records, and last week, the two parties came to an agreement for Stephanie and Sherwood to purchase Bako’s interest. “The corporate documentation did not create an obligation on either party to buy or sell [what’s commonly called a shotgun clause],” says Bako’s attorney, Richard Becker. “We have a deal for him to sell ... an agreement in principle. I hope that this deal will be done in a few weeks; we just have to go through the documentation,” Becker adds. “That pending litigation has been, at least for the moment, subsumed into the purchase and sale agreement.”

Bako says he’s heard a lot of speculation about why he’s no longer at La Fonda and even addressed with The Independent the most distasteful of the rumors — an allegation that he was stealing items from the restaurant to supply his Broussard eatery, Ziggy’s Grill. Bako says he did move supplies back and forth from Ziggy’s to La Fonda, but that everything was accounted for and that Dunbar, as kitchen manager, was aware of the swaps.

“It’s unfounded. I don’t know what [else] to say,” Bako offers. “I told Leebob once, ‘In 30 years I took three bottles of wine,’ and he laughed.”

Attorney Becker says Stephanie and Sherwood have made no allegations of theft to him.

“My issue is the restaurant I’m about to open,” Bako says. “I’ve gotten over it. I’m a big boy. I just want closure.”

Bako’s “Tex-Mex and Beyond.”

20110928-cover-0104
Sylvia Lopez calls the shots in the kitchen at Bako’s

That’s what’s come of Gabe Bako’s departure from La Fonda. The restaurant, in the former spot of Serranos Salsa Co, is only a half mile up the street from La Fonda. Using his name to keep the menu general and adding “Beyond” leaves the door open for the restaurant to serve seasonal dishes that aren’t necessarily Tex-Mex, Mexican or Southwest, Bako says.

Petroleum geologist Lee Bader is anxiously awaiting the opening. Bader, who says he had been a customer of La Fonda for about 40 years, has not returned since Bako’s departure. “Once he was no longer there, I had no reason to go,” Bader says. “I thought he ran the restaurant really well, and I thought his management skills were excellent. It was one of the best-run restaurants in town.”

Bako insists the new restaurant is not about retaliation. “Ask my wife. Ask my partners. I’ve separated the two,” Bako says. “I had to for sanity reasons. I just miss the interaction with the customers, the employees.”

The menu and concept aren’t yet finalized, but from the look of the dishes, Lopez is off to a good start. “The concept, I have to give Sylvia a lot of credit,” Bako says. “She’s surpassed our expectations in creativity and presentation.”

The restaurant seats about 360 with two outside patios and — unlike La Fonda — food will be served in the bar. It’ll be a limited menu, with some items exclusive to the bar, Dunbar says. “But if they insist on [other menu items],” Bako chimes in, “we’ll let them have it.”

While Lopez runs the kitchen, Dunbar and Bako will be managing the front of the house. “They are not employees. They are working partners. There’s a big difference,” says Bako, who also has a silent partner.

And the big question: Will he serve La Fonda margaritas? Bako was evasive on this question, saying only that his margaritas will be as good or better than La Fonda. But it appears there is nothing to stop him, as the recipe (or a replica of it) is used in town by a number of ex-La Fonda employees, including the Filling Station and locations of Legends — along with Bako’s own Ziggy’s Grill. The recipe, which comes from an old tequila bottle, was even published by The Daily Advertiser about a decade ago.

Bako’s house-blend margarita and a top-shelf mango margarita will pour from the machines at the bar.

And what of that spot — the so-called cursed corner at Johnston Street and Doucet Road that’s housed four shuttered restaurants so far? “They didn’t have what we have,” Bako says, noting that each of those concepts had problems that had nothing to do with the location. He believes Bako’s will break the curse: “We’re going to find out soon.”

Gabe Bako is not sure what kind of atmosphere Bako’s will be known for, because customers will play a big role in defining it. “We want a happy, upbeat atmosphere, good service from knowledgeable servers,” he says.

But what if — God forbid — patrons get rowdy? Now 64, Bako laughs off those early impressions, saying he quickly grew to appreciate the unique experience La Fonda offers. “I’ve come to terms with it, with age and experience,” he says. “Hopefully, Bako’s is something similar.”

The few times I went to La Fonda to eat, I was disappointed with the mediocrity. No risks taken. No ingenuity. Bland, uninspired. It's still like that for all I know. So I hope this new venture is not just a reincarnation. I'm tired of going to Houston to get good Mexican food.

Miss Tea, you and every one with no taste buds need to be frequent diners at Bako's. "Do have any, IDEA WHAT MEXICAN FOOD IS ? and YOU MUST BE A BLOND or else you would know that Lafonda'S food IS TEX MEX, and the mexican food served in Houston is TEX MEX, DUH ! Now, the true blue Mexican cook at the new BAKO"s is a genuine Mexican Native, therefore the mexican food that Bako's will be serving "WILL BE NATIVE MEXICAN, and believe me there is a "HUGE DIFFERENCE in taste, due to seasoning, ingredients and cooking methods, beware the TEX MEX taste is null and void....and has no place in Mejico.
This is a pet peeve of mine, Hippy Tayo's who know not the difference between a Chile pequenio and a chile serrano,. Oh by the way, Serrano's, "WAS TRUE BLUE CALIFORNIA's version of real Mexican food, again a huge dufferential between the DOS ! I being a true gourmet, who would never wrap an oyster in a tortilla and waste the tortilla in this profane manner, can attest to this gourmand fact

Now lets get down to the nitty gritty, If you want to throw ca-ca, wait until Leebob Childrens gag is lifted rather that sanctify Bako ! believe me, he does not in any way deserve, SAINTHOOD.

MISS TEA, you mention greed, yes that is "Correct, only you are on the outside looking in and have no idea where the greed originated and who was guilty of greed. It is admirable of you to stand up for your friend Gabe. Hell everyone of Joey Durels cronys are the first to stand up for jOEY.
But, no matter how many Bako family and friends blow Gabe's horn. THE FACT REMAINS that LAFONDA's food products were moving one-way, that is to his ziggys hideaway, a fitting name, Eh ? NOONE moves a restaurants food stock from a business owned in partnership with family members, to a restaurant owned by one side of the partnership, as in this case.
Gabe's allegiance belonged to Lafonda's not to Ziggy's, the little takee outee cafe that he told everyone was owned by his son. Now, Mr. Leebob's Children are gagged, this is the order sent down until indictment by law. But every employee at Lafonda's became aware of the back door practice that had been ongoing since before the Cox's children returned to * protect their Legacy, and if Manager Dunbar had no idea what was occurring on his watch, he will quickly recollect his memory when the pressure is put on him. Lafonda's is an "INSTITUITION, which is worth more than ten zillion Bako's Taco's. The Food manager DUNBAR, now at Bako's could spill the pinto beans to save himself. The present Lafonda managers can attest to the one way delivery of Lafonda's stock down I-49 to Ziggys. These are hard facts, everyone know its impossible to duplicate Lafonda's, Lafonda's is like the MONA LISA, there is only one MONA LISA and there will always be uno, NUMERO UNO, LAFONDA"S!

Lets not forget Mrs Cox Gagnard grew up in that restaurant. I am sure it would have been a lot easier for her to stay in Dallas and just recieve a check and not have to be there every night. What would propel her to move back? It's basic common sense - I speculate HIS HAND WAS IN THE COOKIE JAR! Since he was the only one minding the store that was probably easy to do but he would have had to have help from...wait a minute...oh yes the kitchen manager who was fired. It's like CSI restaurant style! The clues are all over the article. I am sure their are legal reasons why she cannot speak and feel sorry that her deceased father is being used to promote another business. He and his partner kitchen manager belong together. The thiefs are always the ones you trust most. Talk about The Independent being dupped just like the "W" store all shiney on the outside but crooked on the inside. Oh yeah and one other thing if Leebob Cox had wanted Gabe Bako to run LaFonda forever he would have sold it to him...but wait a minute...he didn't.

I was employed as a waiter from 1996 to 2000 when Leebob, Gabe and Sherwood were all working at Lafonda. I can assure you that Gabe was responsible for the wait staff and the attention to detail which so many of ya'll have talked about.

"...waiters and waitress who can take 12 orders and set the orders down in their respective places..."

As far as Bako's location being cursed the previous establishments never had all three things needed for survival in this town good food, great drinks and great service. If you have those three the atmosphere will come.

LaFonda was Leebob. He is the person who built LaFonda and surrounded himself with valuable, trusted employees and friends and yes, Gabe was one. Together they continued to build a very successful restaurant. There is no denying that no matter what side you are on. At this point, I can't help but think what would Leebob say about all of this. No matter what, I know this is not what Leebob had in mind for his restaurant or his legacy. That is what is really a shame.

It's a shame there is so much argument when the restaurant has not even opened yet for anyone to judge it. Living in Lafayette I've always been interested to see when a new place is going to open and what it will have to offer. What's done is done and it does no good for anyone to speculate and point fingers at a situation when they probably don't know anything about it outside of this article. I know in situations like these it's pretty much impossible not to have any negative feedback, but I say let them open and try it yourself before you pass judgement and maybe you'll be surprised. I wish them all the best and hope this restaurant works out I really don't see anything wrong with that location, but let's be honest, "Booties" was never going to last forever. Maybe this is the type of place the location needs to last. I'm looking forward to trying it out soon.

First off let's clarify that ANON is clearly lacking the "common sense" that he/she speculates is so blatantly obvious. To sit there and fill the internet with your slanderous accusations that have no real evidence and defile the names of those two gentlemen all the while not having the audacity to even post your real name is simply nauseating. But let's "speculate" as to why you lack the spine to post who you really are, shall we? But then again that one is too easy. Let's instead speculate on the reasons why the ABIZ rack mysteriously disappeared the day the article was posted looking for Mr. Bako. How about the reasons why it is the end of September and we are just finding out the truth behind the departure or Mr. Bako? But then "departure" makes it sound as if he willing left. How about we instead use the word "termination"? So please share with all the readers, why did La Fonda work so hard to hide the truth? If La Fonda is such the established "institution" that NOTORIOUS GENTLEMANS SOCIETY claims, what were they afraid of in saying "Gabe Bako has been fired." No, instead the patrons of that restaurant were looked in the eye and lied to. My hypothesis is that La Fonda knew the repercussions that would follow. I have all the respect in the world for Mr. Cox, may he rest in peace, but it cannot be denied that Mr. Bako was the face of that restaurant, especially after the passing of Mr. Cox, and La Fonda knew that to look into the face of their patrons and say that Mr. Bako was terminated would not only raise questions and suspicions but also would cause patrons to walk out those doors and never look back. So instead they lied. They looked us in the eye and lied. What a slap in the face. What a disgrace to those who kept you in business for so many years. Another thing, the allegation you cunningly formulated stating that Mr. Cox is being use to "promote another business" could not be further from the truth. The restaurant is not being called "employees who formally worked at La Fonda", nor is it being called "Mr. Cox's almost successor's restaurant". No, it is being called "Bako's". Plain and simple. There is nothing there that is using Mr. Cox's name to advertise. That was a story that you created out of no where just like your accusations of theft. So I propose that you ANON leave you half baked thoughts and false accusations to your little self and we leave the successfulness of Bako's to Lafayette. Time will show us all.

Everyone of you who plea bako's in a very animositical manner when you use God as a reference spell it correctly, its " GOD not GAD, edes una pendeja, your tunnel vision is distorting the big picture. LADRONA TAMBIEN.

Lafonda's will never take a back seat to another restaurant in this town, the Oilfield clientele will never, hear me, never BAILOUT, on Leebob Kids.... Lebob Cox had his start in the Oil Patch and believe me the Oil Patch stands with their own. Now, I cannot spell it out any clearer than this.

OH, BY THE WAY " DRY HOLE LEE BADER, " geologist HOOYA, I'll match my calloused gojo roughened hands against your hands. I HAVE PERSONALLY OPENED THE WING VALVE ON 2200 WELLS FROM MOSCOW TO BOSCO AND FROM ABU DHABI VIA CALIFORNIA TO FLORIDA, THE OFFSHORE WATERS AND UNITED STATES TERRITORIAL WATERS.
OH, AND I HAVE BEEN DINING AT LAFONDA'S FOR THE PAST 5O YEARS, AND, I KNEW LEEBOB COX VERY WELL, AND I AND MY ASSOCIATES HAVE A TABLE FOR TEN... THIS FRIDAY, WHICH IS THE 30TH. OF SEPTEMBER.
AND MY NAME IS CIANO LEAL, AND I WAS RAISED ON LAFONDA'S FARE.

What has been a turmoil has turned out ok for all. Leebobs children will always be his Legacy. Stepahnies return was a welcome site. Her friendly smile, Good nature, commitment to continue what her Father started shines through. She has good loyal employees who have been as much a part of that establishment as anyone one else. I suspect, Lafondas will survive and thrive under Stepahnies leadership. LeeBobs friendly smile and nature clearly shines throuigh when you see Stepahnie seating people. No matter what poeople think or say, Lafondas will survive. It is and has been an icon foir generations. A dispute over management, ownership will not shut this restaurant down. Wheter gabe makes it is yet to be seen. I am sure hell give it a solid go.
As related the experience of the children of LeeBob. Well lets just say its genetic and enough said. Good luck to all.

I had been woefully oblivious to what had been going on. But we went to LaFonda's for lunch yesterday and got there about 11:40AM. And I was stunned to see the lack of people there. Clearly people are voting with their wallet.

And another thing, LaFonda's had clearly changed their tortilla chips. Hopefully that is just a temporary thing. That was about the only real change I noted.

All the best,

Soop

Latinaaa - Who said that LeeBob didn't want his kids to take over the restaurant? Isn't it possible that he supported them following their passions and their careers? It's commendable that when the restaurant starting suffering (i.e. rumors of theft), that Stephanie moved back to town to take an active role in the leadership of this restaurant. LaFonda's management team is better than ever and the jovial atmosphere, the improved quality of food, the happy employees, and loyal guests are there to prove it!

These are old friends, old acquiantences and longtime associates, there is much water under the bridge because they were so familiar with the lives of one another. To look at this confrontation from the sheer view of a customer or even an employee; is likened to an outsider inserting him or herself smack dab in the middle of a family feud. It does not give us the right to take sides when our understanding of the internal workings of such longstanding relationships are are simply limited by once or even thrice a week visits to there restaurant. Let us keep in mind that this is a painful ordeal for both sides involved and graciously extend or very best wishes to all of them, for they;together, they showed us the very best of times. God Bless them all and may success continue for LaFonda and completely take hold of Bako's also!

I think that several of you have hit the nail on the head. LeeBob would not have wanted any of this. But since it has happened anyway all thing I can say is that Gabe Bako is a good man and to have unsubstantiated accusations being thrown around regarding his honesty and integrity is shameful. I agree with ElisbethC that if any of these wild accusations were true why lie about it, unless you are trying to save face. Also, the family was given the opportunity to address all of this in the article. They choose not too only turn around and have people that are obvisouly close to them personally attack someone in an open forum where no facts are check, etc it is disgraceful! We are talking about a man that for 40+ years poured his blood, sweat and tears into that place. Again disgraceful!

Hey I worked at Lafonda in the mid 80's, with Lebob, Gabe and the rest, gabe was a good manager, and attended to everything, its a shame after his long years of loyal service, he gets voted out 2-1 by the kids. Their father, who I had much respect for, had his cold blooded ways too, I had heard that when the prior kitchen manager (their for over 20 years), retired all he wanted was to have Lebob continue his health insurance, Lebob said no, guess the apple doesn't fall for from the tree with respect to loyality between employee/owners

I always say: Gabe Bako is the BEST and HARDEST boss I have ever had. If he took a chance and hired a 'kid' then within the span of a few weeks/months, that 'kid' had either been made an adult or was well on his/her way outta his business. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the man and am grateful I was able to work for him.

I wish you all the success in the world, GB! I will visit soon and eat a Bakotaco ;)

no one at lafonda was intentionally lying about gabe leaving. he was given every chance to stay, and stephanie wanted him to. he chose to leave when richard was fired for being a lazy manager who spent most of his time smoking cigarettes outside and playing on his iphone in the middle of peak shifts (strictly business). gabe chose to take time off to evaluate whether or not he wanted to stay because his "friend" was fired. stephanie had no answer from gabe and chose to come up with some sort of reason for his departure. instead of going around telling magazines about gabe being the bad guy and running out on his faithful employees, stephanie stood strong and took the critisism and remained silent. bottom line is that this is no ones business but stephanie, sherwood, and gabe, but if you want to butt in maybe you should find out the tuth first.its just sad no matter what anyone believes is that thi whole thing was used to promote gabes new restaurant while ruining the cox name. leebob has been disrespected in the fullest and if the independent was a reputable magazine they would get the other half of this story when its concluded in the courts and everyone has their turn to speak.

The author didn't say don't have an opinion She said "keep it civil". THe article did not attack anyone it simply stated what happened. But people tend to put their own personal spin on things and coming on here and making backhanded comments really does no good for anyone. It doesn't make either party look good and as the article said people were asked to speak and they said they did not have time for it or simply said no. So rather than turning this into a personal vendetta why not just take the article for what it is and let it go? That's just my opinion.

Wow! So many opinions and speculation. No one will ever know what really happened until Gabe, Stephanie, and Sherwood allow the truth to be known, if they choose to do that. I have learned there are always two sides to every story so i would think boith sides have merit no matter what anyone writes. It is what it is and thats that. Lafondas has a solid following and it is not because gabe was there or Stepahnie came back. Lafondas is an icon in Lafayette and was made by lebob cox, his vision , his many patrons over the years, and hard work. Many come and many go in a businesses life cycle. A good business always survives no matter what opinions you may read. Stephanie and Sherwood are his only heirs. Coming back to Lafayette to run her fathers legacy, im sure, was a huge commitment. I am sure her father knew what he was doing when he left his kids with a balancing vote on the board. That was set up by him. Obviously he did that for his own reasons. Whether we agree or disagree, it really doesnt matter. I suggest everyone wait and see how things turn out. I believe, at the end of the day, that Gabe will have what he has always wanted, and the kids will have what is rightfully theirs and what they paid a dear price for while growing up.(No One can understand that but them). So lets all calm down and wait and see. Lafayette is a very good town and will support thiose who offer good products and work hard at their business. Tthere are no give mes in lafayette. Yoiu have to earn it. If you do this town is very loyal.
Good luck to all (Stepahnie, Sherwood, Gabe)

leslie d, how is this for real names ? and you can hide behind your split tail all day long.
Update : Sept. 30 dinner, party of 10 , so many loyal patrons at Lafonda's surely an indication of whats to remain as the busiest gatherig place in the state.
The food remains as good as any, from lafayette to San Antonio. I happen to know who were the first cooks at Lafonda's and I know that Lafonda's fare has not changed one whit. And if anyone wants a wee bit of action,
I have a thousand bucks against a Meche's donut that there will definitely occur a resurgence of loyal Lafonda's clientele to its doors, moreso in light of the thrash talk from Ex-employees Lafonda's. AS usual Stephanie continues as the perfect hostess, classy little lady front and center.

I think , after reading the many posts, that the commenting public doesnt really know what hapened and maybey never will. I see a one sided story . If the cox children didnt comment they chose not to comment realizing that it would oonly serve to fuel the paper and comments and not resolve anything at all. Resolve will come between Gabe and the cox children. Whether gabe knew Lee Bob that well or not really isnt the point. Whether he poured his life into this restaurant, isnt the issue. Lee Bo started this establishment on pennies and made nothing for many many years. Sweat equity? Well i happen to know this is a term Lee Bo cox supported. If Gabe is to make it ten he will. To constantly shoot at him or the cox children is a tradgedy and coward like. Let them settle their issues and both move on. Whether food was taken, patrons treated badly or not, they both deserve the chance to prove themselves to this community. Fueling the fight through a paper is not the thing to do. Of course both are getting free advertisement at this point. Good and bad. I know the cox children elected not to respond. Good for them. They have taken the high ground by not respoonding. I think they did the correct thing. This he said /you said/they said only serves to allow the public to voice opinions. They are just that. Opinions. I suggest no one knows the real story and never will from either side. In any event lets wait and see what happens with both. Time will tell.

LaFonda customer since 1965, almost weekly since 1982. I am absolutely positive some of the food has diminished in quality. I found LaFonda to be a unique restaurant because of the chips and dip, the nachos, the enchiladas, the margaritas, the service, and the patrons. About 15 years ago there was a slight change in the nachos and enchiladas because of the cheese blend, but nothing like the change in the past few months. The chips are terrible, which affects the chip/dip combo as well as the nachos. The cheese blend has changed for the worse again which affects both the nachos and the enchiladas. The beef and cheese nachos and beef enchiladas seem "watery" and just don't taste right. As I finished my meal last week, I sadly wondered if this would be my last meal at my all-time favorite restaurant. The issue between Gabe and the Cox children have nothing to do with whether or not I will frequent LaFonda. The margaritas, the patrons, the service, and the glory years will not matter if the food is sub-standard. The caricatures on the wall will fade, the noise will abate, and the great LaFonda that once defined the social fabric of Lafayette, the great LaFonda that silently witnessed the creation and dissolution of so many relationships, so much happiness and heartbreak, will slide into social irrelevance.
