Landry fundraising cleared by ethics board

State Rep. Nancy Landry, R-Lafayette, has been given a green light by the Louisiana Ethics Administration to conduct fundraising activities on behalf of political office seekers and fellow legislators during the upcoming legislative session. The District 31 lawmaker is the owner of Pelican Strategies, a Lafayette public relations firm. She sought an advisory opinion from the ethics board on Jan. 26; the board considered the matter at its Feb. 19 meeting.

Landry asked for the board’s opinion on a wide range of scenarios including whether her firm could raise funds for judicial candidates, political action committees and for current office holders in the Legislature. In its response to Landry’s query, the board said the Campaign Finance Disclosure Act prohibits lawmakers from accepting contributions to their own campaigns during a legislative session, but Landry’s company may collect donations and raise money for other candidates and office holders. However, the board said sitting state lawmakers are barred from accepting or depositing campaign contributions while the session is in progress.

Using the word "cleared" in the same sentence as the word "ethics board" suggests Landry has done something wrong. A misleading headline, though totally uninentional I think.

I'll be trying to keep track of the candidates she's "collecting" for and be sure to vote for someone else. I don't like the idea her job is to solicit funds for other candidates - too many people "in bed" with one another. Who's keeping the "Did Not Contribute" list??? This is politics at its worst & is certain to taint Louisiana politics even more. I thought the idea was to move away from this.....

Rep. Landry is one of the straightest shooters in all of Louisiana politics. As her letter made clear, she was making sure everything she did was above board.

Tired of people who criticize everyone and everything without having a clue what they're talking about.
