Update: Council votes in favor of annexation

[Editor's Note: This story was updated at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday.]

After spending nearly 30 minutes behind closed doors in executive session consulting with Lafayette Consolidated Government’s legal department and administration, the City-Parish Council emerged and voted unanimously on a pair of introductory ordinances. The first ordinance rescinded an April vote annexing a large swath of land in south Lafayette Parish that includes Les Vieux Chenes Golf Course and Fabacher Field; the second ordinance annexes the same area.

The re-do comes after the city of Broussard threatened legal action against the annexation, accusing Lafayette Consolidated Government of failing to adhere to the public notice law; the council originally voted to annex the area April 26, 24 hours after publishing notice of the special Monday-morning meeting in The Sunday Advertiser.

Les Vieux Chenes and Fabacher Field are municipal recreation areas built and maintained by city of Lafayette taxes. Lafayette was thwarted in an attempt to annex the area adjacent to the Broussard city limits a month ago when Broussard purchased a strip of land off the Ambassador Caffery Parkway extension leading to the golf course.

Tuesday’s vote was introductory; a final vote on the annexation will be held on June 1.
