Dardenne and Fayard by the numbers

And now there are two: Secretary of State Jay Dardenne, a Baton Rouge Republican and private attorney, and political neophyte Caroline Fayard, a Democrat from New Orleans. They bested a field of eight candidates Saturday evening and are already gearing up for the Nov. 2 general election. Up until now, though, it hasn’t been a cheap experience. Although there are still a few election day spending reports to be filed, records maintained by the Louisiana Board of Ethics give us a good idea of how much each of the runoff candidates spent to turn out their supporters.

With 181,000 votes banked and somewhere in the neighborhood of $279,000 spent on his race, Dardenne shelled out an average of $1.54 on every individual that voted for his campaign. Fayard, meanwhile, with her 159,000 tally and $321,000 spending spree — much of it her own — had a political ratio of $2.01 per voter. Apparently, it does pay to have better name recognition.

In coming weeks, expect Fayard to mount a campaign based at least partly on generational politics — out with the old, in with the new — that might smack slightly of Gov. Bobby Jindal’s historic run for governor. Sources close to Dardenne’s camp will be sticking with what Dardenne is known best for: his experience. They’ll argue that Fayard is a smart and capable candidate who’s perfect for a state like Massachusetts, but not Louisiana, given her connections to Democrats who lean left.

Dardenne from his position as Secretary of State received 28% of the total vote. Fayard, a political newcomer, received 24%. Sammy Kershaw was the leading vote getter in over 30 parishes. Fayard will get over half of Kershaw's voters. It won't be easy, but Fayard may be our next Lt. Governor.

Everyone knows what the political elite want. They want Dardenne to be Lt. Gov. That way "GIVE ME A BIG RAISE MICHOT" can run for Dardenne's present position. And when he runs the Mighty Lafayette Chamber of Commerce will endorse him. Just like they endorsed Mr. Brown against Mr. Cockerham. P.S. Mr. Brown got 30% Mr. Cockerham got 70%! And this is in the heart of Chamber Country! Now they know they have NO STROKE!! THE CHAMBER SHOULD STAY OUT OF POLITICAL RACES!! And do what they do best, Make Plastic!!

I used to work for Louis Michot when he owned Burger Chef when it was by USL.

Never had a problem with the old man, so the rest of them can't be bad.

Can't support a Fayard, ever. It's as bad supporting a Landrieu.

She has no chance, as long as Dardenne pursues the strategy Jeremy outlines. See http://jeffsadow.blogspot.com/...allot.html and http://jeffsadow.blogspot.com/...ne-to.html

Most people in this state are not partisan, so they don't care what party the candidate is in. That gives Fayard a chance. Prof. Sadow is so far in the bag for the GOP, he can't give an objective analysis.

My non-partisan opinion is that Fayard has a better-than- average chance, if for no other reason than Republicans are too sure of themselves.

Dems are losing in the U.S. Senate race because they are running a one- note campaign based around Vitter's personal life. There's your proof that one-note campaigns do not work.

People will say I'm comparing apples and oranges.

I'm not.

A one-note campaign is a one-note campaign, whether it's about hookers, Obama, or whatever.

And if they don't work for Dems, why should it work for Republicans? It can't.

The Dead Pelican,

You're not dead yet, you're just suffering from the poison that Landrieu, VITTER, and that CLOWN GOVERNOR, BP Dumped in the GULF.

You're right, Dems are running a one-note campaign-"don't go back to the DICK/BUSH policies.

That one-note should haunt reasonable people all over america for if we let these REPUBLICAN/TEA PARTY CLOWNS get their dumb, stupid hands on our government-we deserve what we get.

I remember Jay Dardene when I was a student at LSU. He was the SGA Pres and I was not impressed with him. You could see that he wanted to be a governor or senator someday.

I voted for Sammy. He went bankrupt and ran around on his wife. The met the prerequisites for the job! Typical Louisiana politician.

Fayard would have gotten my vote except she is close to the Clintons and Landrieu whom I despise.

I don't want to vote in this election but I guess I will have to hold my nose tightly and pull the lever for Dardenne (ugh). I just can't support anyone who has any ties to Obama, Landrieu or Clinton.

Similiarly, what is it about the $1.3 trillion dollar deficit that GEORGE AND DICK that you like so much.

Joker, YOU'RE A CLOWN, BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE LIKE DICK TOO.

Joker, don't be a DICK!
