Mouton negotiating plea deal with feds

The Associated Press reports that Henry Mouton, 54, of Lafayette, is talking with federal prosecutors about a possible plea deal in connection with charges of receiving illegal payoffs and lying to federal investigators about his ties to a landfill company while lobbying to keep a rival landfill closed.

According to the AP, court documents filed Tuesday by his lawyer reveal Mouton, a former state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries commissioner, has started discussing the potential deal with the feds and is requesting that his May 9 trial be continued. No details of the possible plea deal were mentioned in the court document.

Mouton is accused of using his position as a WL&F commissioner to aggressively lobby congressmen, the EPA and the FBI for the closure of the Old Gentilly Landfill in New Orleans, which reopened in the city in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The Lafayette resident reportedly received almost a half a million dollars from rival landfill River Birch, though more recent reports say Mouton was on retainer for River Birch owner Fred Heebe for years before he was appointed to the commission.

Heebe has been named as a likely target of federal indictment for his ties to Jefferson Parish government corruption.

For Hank Mouton to PLEAD to something, anything, means he is guilty of more than he PLEADING to. When you plead, you are admitting guilt to less than what you have been charged with. Pleading guilty means that Hank is guilty and had he gone to trial, the chances of him being found guilty and convicted of much more than what he pleads to are very great indeed. A truly innocent man will not plead guilty to anything, but will fight for his name, reputation, and uphold his integrity. Hank Mouton is not able to fight for any of that because he is, in fact, guilty. I am not just saying that. He will, by pleading guilty. Not only that, but Hank has shown that he has no integrity just by the fact that he designed his personal LDWF letterhead paper in order to con people.

Some men walk the walk and leave their footprints in the sands of time as their legacy, then we have those men who slither through life and leave the mark of a snake in the sand as their legacy, this has been the norm for most politicians, and political appointees...

Interesting enough, the LA DEQ has been denying any landfill permits/expansions for the past 3 years. Some of these are in court ... I wonder how deep this runs.
