Mike Huval sworn in at Capitol

Longtime former St. Martin Parish Councilman Mike Huval was sworn in Monday afternoon as the newest member of the state House of Representatives, according to The Times-Picayune’s website.

Huval, R-Parks, is an insurance agent who served on the St. Martin Parish Council for 15 years. He defeated St. Martinville City Councilman Craig Prosper in a recent special election to fill the House seat vacated by state Sen. Fred Mills Jr.

Mills beat a long list of candidates in a special election after former state Sen. Troy Hebert, I-Jeanerette, was named commissioner of the state office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control.

Huval’s oath of office leaves one open seat in the House, an Acadiana district that came open when state Rep. Jonathan Perry, R-Kaplan, defeated local businessman Nathan Granger for a Senate seat. The T-P reports that the primary in that race is Saturday, and a special election, if needed, is set for May 28.
