Jindal’s choice for Pastorek replacement disputed

Some members of the state’s top school board are calling John White, head of the state’s Recovery School District, unseasoned and not equipped to take over as interim state superintendent of education following Paul Pastorek’s resignation.

According to The Advocate, three Board of Elementary and Secondary Education members have publicly stated they will not support White being appointed to the post, which counters Gov. Bobby Jindal’s recommendation to have White serve as the temporary head of public education in Louisiana.

A fourth BESE member also is said to be opposed to Jindal’s pick, but that has not been confirmed. Since BESE is the board charged with selecting an interim, four votes against White would be enough to block him from taking Pastorek’s position.

White, 35, started his job as head of the Recovery School District just days before Pastorek announced he is resigning. White is the former deputy chancellor of New York City schools:
[Dale] Bayard [of Lake Charles] said he will oppose efforts to make White interim state superintendent.

“The guy really needs to get seasoned to handle such an important job,” Bayard said.

[Linda] Johnson [of Plaquemine] also said she will oppose White becoming interim state superintendent.

“We brought him 30 days ago to be RSD superintendent,” Johnson said. “In my opinion he has not had an opportunity to prove himself.”
The person chosen to temporarily oversee public education for 668,000 children in the state will only have a seven-month contract, The Advocate reports, because a new BESE board will be seated in January.

The BESE members who oppose the temporary appointment of John White as Superintendent of Education for the state have good reasons for their opposition. Although White spent a few years as deputy chancellor of NYC schools, he holds only a bachelor's degree. It's quite strange that he was hired for the position, considering that he doesn't hold at least a master's degree. He does hold a certification from the Broad Foundation, a training institution for people interested in "the business of education." Education pundit Diane Ravitch referred to White as "a specialist in closing public schools, opening charters" on hearing the news of his appointment to the N.O. position. I guess what he lacks in education and significant years of experience is made up by having the "correct" ideology, from Jindal's point of view. I'm glad to hear some of the BESE members are refusing to drink that Kool-Aid.

What lap dog Pastorek was doing gradually in terms of charter schools and vouchers, White would do immediately without hesitation. Pastorek bagan the process of gutting the public education system with the approval and pushing of Piyush Jindal. White, if selected, was chosen for RSD because Pastorek knew months ago that he would make this move which is why Jindal expressed little remorse at his departure. He also had every intention of putting White's name out there for superintendent. Jindal doesn't want just a lapdog this time, he wants a pitbull who will tear the system to shreds. White, if selected, would be ruthless in the continued gutting of the Louisiana Public School System. BESE members need to stand up, for once, and buck Piyush Jindal.

It's just stunning reading these remarks to stop and remember that this public education system that everyone is so viciously defending is a dismal, and expensive, failure. Why SHOULDN'T these guys "gut" the public education system? Everyone agrees it's F'd up and needs to be changed, right?

I thought all you leftists LOVED "change" and "reform".

Put some of that Slap Ya Momma Cajun seasoning on him. He'll be okay after that.

Layne,

If the guys got talent, his degree shouldn't matter. Ragin is correct. The school system is a failure. Charter schools work. What's the problem? I know, the lackey BESE members who have failed at their job for the past twenty years wouldn't have any control over the charter schools.

Charter schools have no better track record than public schools, and they are free to cherry pick the best and brightest students. Whatever can be done in a charter school can also be done in a public school (witness the effectiveness of public magnet schools). This is simply the privatization of education. Piyush clearly has some big contributors in the charter education growth industry!
