Chargois challenging Neustrom for sheriff

Richard A. “Rick” Chargois, a 25-year veteran of the Louisiana State Police, is challenging incumbent Lafayette Parish Sheriff Mike Neustrom Oct. 22.

RickChargoisForReleaseChargois served as a trooper/deputy commander and headed various departments (Uniform Operations and the Bureau of Investigations) of the Louisiana State Police until his retirement in late 2004.

Chargois’s father, Eric, also served in law enforcement for approximately 40 years, retiring from the Louisiana State Police as a Region II major inspector and then serving as chief deputy under then-Lafayette Parish sheriffs Ross Brupbacher and Donald Breaux until his death. “I can truthfully say that serving the public in a law enforcement capacity has been engrained since birth,” Chargois says.

“Fortunately, the average citizen in Lafayette Parish will never need to call upon the Sheriff’s Department, City Police, Fire Department or any other emergency service for help,” Chargois said. “But for those individuals who find themselves involved in any life threatening situation, it is imperative that those departments operate in a timely and efficient manner. As taxpayers we expect our streets and neighborhoods to be safe and our parks, shopping centers and schools crime free. Sadly, we do have drugs in our schools and on our streets, high crime areas do exist in our parish and our children and grandchildren are exposed to potential criminal activity at every turn.”

Chargois is a lifelong resident of the Acadiana area, is married, and has five daughters and five grandchildren. Chargois is a Republican.

Neustrom, a Democrat, announced his bid for re-election earlier this month. A former criminology professor at UL Lafayette, he was first elected in a runoff in 1999. He beat the same opponent, Republican George Armbruster, in another runoff in 2003 but faced no opponent in 2007.

Qualifying begins Sept. 6.

Chargois isn't running to win because he knows that he cannot beat a sheriff and man the caliber of Mike Neustrom. He is running to establish name recognition for when Mike Neustrom decides to retire. Chargois will then have a leg up on any competition. That being said, what Lafayette Parish does not need is another retirement job haven for retired state police like it was under Don Breaux. Should Chargois ever become sheriff, that is was Lafayette Parish has to look forward to. Again.

The press release says Big Rick retired in 2004 and that he is a life long resident of Acadiana. OK, then what has he been doing for the past seven years? How about filling the public in on that? WHERE in Acadiana does he live now and for how long? Where DID he live in Acadiana? Lets get all the info and facts out there if this former trooper, retired since 2004, wants to receive votes for chief law enforcement officer of Lafayette Parish.

I'm so happy this man is running for Sheriff. I worked under him after he left the state police and he was such an incredible boss to have. More than that, he's just an incredible person of high morals and that is something that is one of the core traits needed for anyone in the law enforcement community. I'm proud to call him my friend and I can't wait to watch him succeed.

NORTHSIDIAN SHOTGUN, you write in on regular basis spewing semi literate half witticisms. You have a lot of nerve and no right to tell someone to shut up for doing what you do on a regular basis: give their opinion. OK must have touched a nerve of truth with you. Since that is the case, you, PGF, and Rick vote for Rick. The rest of the parish will vote for Neustrom. Now you tighten up and be civil.

Say what, Shut up ! As ragin-cajun says... you be honest and straight-fore and you're labeled semi-literate, hate-mongrel, you go with the alternative realist and you are in the stupid clique. How to win ? I've never learned the Queens Rules and I've never lost one.

"Say what" are you implying that Mr. Chargois doesn't meet the residency qualifications to run for Sheriff? I would be interested in knowing what you are insinuating.

I don't know Mr. Chargois, but I have had the distaste of witnessing the iniquities of the Neustrom adminstration. Mr. Nesutrom walks to church each day he is at work and that is what most people see. A man of high standards, who ran a grass roots campaign in 2000 and has an easy ride the last twelve years because of his perceived image. That is the illusion he wants to portray and I think most would be shocked to learn the truth about his administarton. I don't know the man personally and for that reason I will not question is faith, but I do know several of his political appointees and I hope each time he walsk to church he is atleast asking for forgiveness for the inqities he has brought upon the people of Lafayette through his administration. He fired one of his original political appointees for having an affair with an employee out of fear that it would hurt his image, but has kept others around for engaging it much more alarming behavior. He is not accessible to the people and if he is in his office more than fifteen hours a week I would be surprised. Of course, since it is election time I expect him to be acting like the Sheriff and spending more time in the office and less time taking trips with his wife on the tax payer dime. I recognize that Mr. Neustrom meets the residence qualifications to run for Sheriff despite the fact that he lived out of Louisiana for several years. Sadly though, he is hardly qualified to serve as the chief law enforcement of this parish. He has skated by and covered up more scandles then "Tricky Dick". Mr. Chargois, if you are reading this, I recognize the service you have provided to the citizens of this state and welcome a change. No one should have a free ride simply because they have skated by for a period of time.

Ah, what a stagnant 4 years Lafayette Parish is choosing. You aren't electing a sheriff anymore. The sheriff has been quite ready to go. You are actually electing a crappy warden and crappy CFO needing enough years for them to retire. What a shame. The arrogance downtown needs to go. But alas, stay lazy Lafayette......stay lazy. You sure as hell kept Kenny Bowen around forever and look how well THAT worked out for you. The I-49 corridor was SUCH a success.
