Busted in Acadiana is busted — literally

Chris_Hebert

[Editor's Note: This story has been updated to include additional information about property seizure in accordance with cyberstalking laws.]

It was only a matter of time. Christopher Hebert, the 36-year-old immoral mastermind behind the Facebook mug shot fan page Busted in Acadiana, was booked into the Lafayette Parish Jail Wednesday afternoon on one count each of stalking and cyberstalking.

Lafayette Police Cpl. Paul Mouton confirms that Hebert’s arrest is based on a series of complaints of both electronic and phone threats filed by a female victim late last year. Police will not release details on the alleged crimes, but Mouton says new developments on the investigation surfaced in recent weeks and led to the arrest.

The alleged victim, who asked to remain anonymous due to personal safety concerns, contacted The Independent following our Sept. 21 cover story, Busted: Busted in Acadiana. The story publicly identified the BIA administrator as Christopher Hebert, the unemployed husband of Lafayette Police officer Amanda Hebert, and exposed several disturbing antics of the page’s creator that went far beyond publishing mug shots and other public information.

Hebert's arrest is unrelated to Busted in Acadiana.

Cyberstalking is defined by Louisiana law as using “electronic communication of any words or language threatening to inflict bodily harm to any person or to such person’s child, sibling, spouse, or dependent, or physical injury to the property of any person, or for the purpose of extorting money or other things of value from any person.”

According to the statute, cyberstalking can also mean “electronically mail or electronically communicate to another repeatedly, whether or not conversation ensues, for the purpose of threatening, terrifying, or harassing any person,” or “to knowingly make any false statement concerning death, injury, illness, disfigurement, indecent conduct, or criminal conduct of the person electronically mailed or of any member of the person’s family or household with the intent to threaten, terrify, or harass.”

Mouton cannot confirm or deny whether Hebert's computers and other electronic devices were seized Wednesday afternoon due to the ongoing investigation, but Mouton says protocol allows for items related to the investigation to be seized if there is probable cause. Further review of said assets can lead to additional charges, Mouton says.

If convicted of cyberstalking, which Mouton says is a felony, Hebert faces up to one year in prison and up to $2,000 in fines, or both. If convicted for stalking, Hebert could receive a maximum one year prison sentence and up to $1,000 in fines.

“He is truly a sociopath and he should be behind bars,” the alleged victim said in an email to The Ind a week ago. “I know that I live in fear that he will some day really act out his threats. I just hope that he is caught and prosecuted before that happens.”

Hebert has been photographed at the Lafayette Parish Jail at least once before Wednesday’s arrest. In December 2001, he was booked for public intimidation, disturbing the peace by appearing intoxicated and remaining where forbidden following an incident on Jefferson Street.

It’s unclear whether Hebert’s mug shot will be appearing on Busted in Acadiana in coming days. The BIA page was shut down Sept. 9 after a UL student first revealed Hebert’s identity, but Hebert has been republishing the site off and on over the past few weeks. The site was still publicly available as of 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Hebert, who has repeatedly denied any involvement with Busted in Acadiana, told his faithful followers recently that if the BIA administrator were ever arrested, the mug shot would be published on BIA. The only question is whether Hebert will live up to his word.

As of 12 p.m. Thursday, Hebert remained in the Lafayette Parish Jail on a $50,000 bond.

The Image is not available. I think everyone who has ever been posted on BIA should post his Mug Shot to their FB Pages outlining what he was busted in acadiana for. Serves him right. Sometimes you get what you give!

The problem wasn't that he published the mugshots, other sites do to. The issue is he was stirring the pot and other stuff others don't do. That's if its actually him.

Heather Miller - You are my hero!!! Thank you so much for having courage and standing up for the citizens of Acadiana. This predator has been wreaking havoc all over this community for too long. I’m praying that all of the victims find the strength and courage to come forward to ensure that Christopher Hebert has a permanent residence at Angola State Prison!

This is right up the Inds alley. They should hire him... Then they can all revel in tabloid style "journalism" together and pretend it's real news.

yeah he knew things about my sister , things we only told to a detective (unless he made contact with us thru the bailbonds man) ~~>cajun something bonds in st martinville if i'm correct. he even knew and posted the name of a cousin we mentioned who my sis was last seen with which blew my mind. I'm so happy to see his face for all to enjoy and ridicule...he gets what he deserves. I was in support or BIA until I really started disagreeing with the taunting and teasing that was taking place. I know mug shots are public but we as citizens have to go look them up with the sheriff not have our family or friends get judged (then told to pay to take down a mugshot). He got the mugshots for those to tease and humiliation to take over and pay to pull down info!!! shame!!!! excuse the spelling please.

Frien,

For the most part, and speaking of the people I have talked to, no one ever minded the mugshot aspect of this at all. In fact most would encourage others to post mugshots in an informative format. The breakdown has and still does occur, when there is facilitation and the allowance of slander, defamation, harassment, and so forth.

I know there have been claims that there is an inability to turn off commenting on FB. And that is a somewhat valid response if we are to believe that the information has to be on FB in the first place. But even still, it was the maliciousness, dog eat dog, mob mentality of the group that was endorsed by the administrator that had everyone upset. The reposting of certain mugs; the constant personal vendetta's being waged.

There are tons of FB pages and groups out there that have countless members and still maintain a certain level of civility. Sure there are always trolls, but there is usually a sense of order. Perhaps if Mr. Hebert does rejoin his site, he can take a more tactful approach and stop hate speech and worse as it is occurring, by either deleting it or reminding users of the purpose of the site.

In any case, I don't solely blame him by a long shot for the things that went on there. The user's and people of our community that went there to make fun of others are just as guilty of stirring the pot as he was.

Also, I believe the IND. engaged this story from the wrong direction. Sometimes facts are enough. Pictures of an individual crossdressing, which was obviously a joke, posted as the main thumbnail for a story is questionable. Contacting a person and possibly trying to coerce them, also questionable. I, throughout the ordeal, even after having my picture of my OWI blasted nonstop by Hebert on several pages, maintained respect for his family and didn't post certain things that I could have. After all, he does have a kid. He does have a family. And there is an internet cache in which many pictures never leave. I would say to let the evidence speak for itself and let that be enough, otherwise you welcome the criticisms that he arguably was right to mention.

But all in all, thank you for the information you did release. It was appreciated. And I do understand the angst of wanting to "bust" someone. But like mentioned earlier. There is always a tactful way to do everything.

This brings to mind words like 'irony', 'karma', and 'douchebag'. It was already wrong of him to display images of people who weren't even yet proven guilty, doing so in an environment that promoted their ridicule, but that he tormented a woman in such a way makes it twice as sweet that he's been 'busted'. I hope she can move on with her life one day, and I hope he's prevented from causing any further harm to her, as well anyone else he's targeted.

Funny...isn't it? People don't really talk about karma much, until things like this happen. I DON'T think any of you need to rebuke Heather Miller, nor The Independent's editor or publishers for what they've done with these articles. I DON'T think anyone needs to rebuke Mr. Wallis for the incontrovertible evidence he's produced here and on his web page. Face facts, people . . . one person has engaged in a bullying campaign the likes of which I've never seen...threatening, frightening and mocking and deriding people. What do you think makes him need to do that? The lust for power and control - because his own life is such a mess and he cannot control himself. This makes him feel big and important - all this. If you want to feel big and important, go out and do something for someone else - something nice, something that contributes to this community and it's well being and increases the peace among people. Yeah...right, I'm sure he won't.

Did it ever occur to you all that The Independent, Heather Miller and Mr. Wallis don't need to use their time to do this? The paper will sell advertisements and people will read it for other stories...they didn't HAVE to do this one. Wallis didn't need to spend all that time digging up this info, either. They did it b/c no one else would. The did it for the many, many people who have been bullied, threatened, scared and made to feel less than b/c of Mr. Hebert. Those folks had already experienced 'learned helplessness'- trying to get help and unable to find it. This investigation they did..and the stories that resulted have given folks the courage to come forward and have helped to get the LPD involved in investigation this guy. Without them...there would be Lord knows how many scared people who'd just about given up on any help coming. That, my friends...ain't tabloid journalism, it's what reporters are at their finest. If the story seems...well, low-brown...blame who it is about and his ways. Those aren't the ways of people who risked themselves getting the story to you to stop this.

I only hope more people take heart. Bullies won't stand forever...because of folks like Healther, Wallis and the staff of the Independent. You don't have to live in fear, being beat down by one - you can come forward and complain. There IS strength in numbers...and the more that do it, the more he will have to answer about to law enforcement. Please...people...take heart. Muster all the courage you have if you've been victimized by him and help stop this little 'reign of terror' that's more or less really been going on for years, according to posters here. Call Heather at the Independent and ask for help...how to get help...and tell what has happened to you. The cats outta the bag already...no shame on you for him doing this...that's all on him.

All these people are commenting about how he threatened them via email, why aren't all of these things being reported and not just talked about. Give him what he deserves! If even a handfull of people report with EVIDENCE then maybe something would be done with him. In the meantime, he has his wife thinking that ALL of these 100's of people that are coming out saying what they know about him or things he did to them are only "lying and hating"! Wake up girl!

I went to school with him and his sister. I knew the family. He was off his rocker and needed help the whole time growing up. He was a threat to society then and even more of one now. He has scammed so many people including his family. He has gotten what he deserves and needs to stay in jail for a long long time to protect everyone else. He will never change and needs to spend a long vacation in mental health before he ever sees daylight and fresh air again.

Nice factual reporting, Ms. Miller. An "immoral mastermind"? When writing an article, please try and refrain from introducing your bias even when covering a sociopath like Mr. Hebert. This is still America when you are innocent until proven guilty.

As far the story, "truth is 'always' stranger than fiction"!

I like "immoral Mastamind" very descriptive. Somehow and somewhere...there's a niche and a pocket of money in all this and maybe even for Mr. Hebert aka "immoral Mastamind" He seems to have cornered the local market on feindish driven behavior. I doubt we have heard the last from this dude.

First off, the Independent and Heather Miller did a FABULOUS job!!! I feel her articles are tactful, informative, and she is the most dedicated and hard-working investigative reporter I've ever had the pleasure of reading articles from. The photo posted on the previous article was his profile photo, it's not like she took his photo and edited it to make fun. He chose it and it made a statement of how he portrays himself, very relevant in my opinion.
Christopher Hebert is not only a predator, online and otherwise, but he looks like he hasn't taken a shower or changed his clothes in months!!! No wonder he had loved making comments about other's appearances, he was desperately trying to feel better about himself.
To those saying that it was the commenters to blame, you must not know the lengths this sick predator was going to. He had MULTIPLE Facebook profiles which he would alternate between to comment on mugs, antagonize defenders, and harass anyone who disagreed. I would estimated that 75% of the "regulars" who commented horrendous things constantly on every mug was him. It was obvious. The writing style, timing, verbiage, etc made it apparent, and so did the obviously fake profile photos.
Its also obvious that it was a solo operation. If there were other admins for the page, they would've been banning every person discussing his arrest or calling him out on BIA in the time he was incarcerated. The page wasn't disabled until some time after he was released. I guess the amount of time it took for him to get to a computer or give the login info to someone he trusted to have it disabled.
I'm sure this won't be the first set of charges brought against him. All his Internet access within his home was confiscated, including computers and any other electronic devices with Internet access. He won't be able to run from any other charges now that all his aliases and constant harassment of people will be traceable by investigators.
The information coming out about his character and the fact that it's always been that way makes me question many things, especially the conflict of interests in the marriage of someone who is a serious threat to society to someone who is supposed to be protecting society from such.
