C’est What? Ag commish hopeful touts prison poppy farms

JamieLaBrancheJamie LaBranche, one of two agriculture commissioner candidates trying to unseat incumbent Commissioner Mike Strain, has big plans for the future of Louisiana’s farm industry.

The LaPlace Democrat tells Jeremy Alford in this week’s 1012 Corridor that Louisiana is ripe for billions of dollars in new private investment from pharmaceutical companies through what he calls a “medical agriculture” program — the nation’s first poppy farm:

The plan involves a partnership with the private sector to cultivate a wide variety of medical plants, like poppy, his cornerstone crop in the plan. The opium poppy, or Papaver Somniferum, is big business around the world and is regulated by international agencies. It’s a popular source for drugs like codeine, heroin and morphine.

The candidate's campaign platform also outlines a perfect place for farmers to begin the innovative Farm to Pharm venture — 7,000 acres at Angola State Penitentiary:

LaBranche said it’s still ripe for investment. “Unfortunately there is not a single industry that produces this plant for market of its medical uses in the United States,” LaBranche said. “The United States relies solely on foreign traders for its medical supply derived from the poppy. It is astounding to know that the two Nations that supplies the U.S. with this product that is so critical to our well being are China and Afghanistan -- two countries that are hell bent on destroying us as a nation.”

“Under my plan, Louisiana will be to the pharmaceutical industry as to what Silicon Valley is to the technological industry.”

Most of the prisoners at Angola have first hand drug knowledge; this will be a big money maker. Go for it!

Warden: "Wait, Dorothy, stay on the yellow brick road."
Dorothy: "But Warden, that's the Emerald City just ahead..."
Wicked Witch (voiceover): "The poppies, feel the poppies, be the poppies."
Scaredcrow: "Wake up Dorothy, wake up Cowardly Lying, oh help me TinHead, what are we going to do?"

not a bad idea, actually. our demand for pharma could be met with this supply. and not sending our money to people who don't like us.

I certainly admire Mr. Labranche's courage to suggest something like this. I can't feel very optimistic about it happening though. What seems like would be a major win for the the state and the country will not be a simple matter of passing legislation. Too many greedy folks have their paws in the poppy business. We spend huge amounts of federal tax dollars on military force to control opium production in Afghanistan, while they tell us its about terrorism.
Lots of military contractors stand to lose tons of money if this happens, and they wont be at all happy about it. In fact, they'll do whatever is needed to make sure this doesn't happen. I expect this story to just go away and be forgotten. If this actually happened I'd be shocked.
