North Lafayette precincts drive Shelvin’s reelection win

As predicted, poll numbers backing incumbent District 3 City-Parish Councilman Brandon Shelvin’s election victory Saturday point to north Lafayette’s poorest precincts.

Shelvin, who ran for office in 2007 despite not having met the residency requirements to run for the seat, took 59.8 percent of the 3,388 votes cast in his district, a 15-precinct area that includes downtown, the Saint streets, several north Lafayette precincts and one polling place in Carencro.

Shelvin prevailed in 10 out of 15 precincts, with his most significant wins coming from voters who poll at Alice Boucher Elementary (80 percent in favor of Shelvin), the Sheriff’s Office Training Center on St. Antoine Street (77 percent for Shelvin) and N.P. Moss Annex on Mudd Avenue (68 percent).

Support for challenger Lloyd Rochon, who captured 40.2 percent of the vote, was confined to five precincts with predictably more white voters. His biggest victories came from Johnston Street Fire Station No. 5 (74 percent), Central Fire Station on Vermilion Street (66 percent) and the Lafayette Consolidated Government building on University Avenue (62 percent).

Shelvin refuses to comment to The Independent because of the paper’s repeated unfavorable coverage of the councilman, much of which details Shelvin’s myriad legal, ethical and financial troubles that came to light after he took office. Read the list here.

But as he’s told those who wonder whether his issues will affect his perception among voters in the district: “My people don’t read the paper.”

“Quite simply, the people have spoken and the people have decided that they would like me to lead them again for another four years,” Shelvin told The Daily Advertiser Saturday.

Check out Wednesday’s Independent for more analysis on Shelvin’s victory and how it’s linked to the most heated north Lafayette runoffs to come.

Sheldon's comment "My people don't read the paper" says everything about why he was re-elected and that they're fine with a "criminal" representing them. It's pretty sad that Shelvin even put his name in the hat, but not a surprise. Let's see if he'll step up and be a leader for a change instead of a laughing stock, yes, Mr. Shelvin, I'm calling you out and hope you read this even though those you represent won't.

Shelvins comment about his supporters not reading the paper pretty much says it all.
Once again progress held back by an uniformed block of voters.

Shelvin's comment, “My people don’t read the paper.” pretty much sums it up. Progress for Lafayette once again stymied by an uninformed electorate.

Do you have a similar link to Durel's ethical troubles I could click on please?

Since campaign contributions seem to be a point of interest for you, check and see how many principals and law firms involved in the Sunbeam Lane/River Ranch scandal contributed to Durel's campaign.

I was told by a we'll known black leader that Lloyd Rochon could not win because he was not one of them. Well we know now the problem in the black community is And it is THEM
I doubt Brandon will finish his term . I am confident he will fail and just be another one of them.

I agree, he was referring to The Independent Paper because it is not available in predominately black neighborhoods. Why is The Independent so racist? Stop hating on the black man and start hiring some to work for you! Stop being a part of the problem and work towards being a part of the solution!

Following is a listing of a few contributors to Durel's campaign. I hope The Independent will look into this with the same enthusiasm as they have looked into Shelvin's finances.

1/2/11 Republic Services PAC Phoenix $2500.00 (Waste PAC)
1/31-7/06/11 Bobby Guidry (Allied waste) $900.00 (Durel renewed Allied Waste's contract without re-bid or council approval)
1/17/11 Allstates Building $2500.00 (applied for 'good neighbor' letter months before Waste Facilities existed)
2/1/11 Rodney Savoy $1100.00 (Manager of Waste Facilities & principal in River Ranch Development)
3/1/11 Frank Slavich $250.00 (attorney for Waste Facilities)
4/12/11 Fenstermaker & Assoc. $2500.00 (check to see how many 'no-bid' contracts they receive from Durel)
10/14/11 River Ranch Development $1000.00 (bought lot on credit from Durel for $850k, may still owe $600k to Durel)
10/21/11 William Fenstermaker $2500.00 (CEO Festermaker & Assoc)

by North Lafayette "Why is The Independent so racist?"
---------------------

The Independent has a leftist bent but racist? I don't see it, or read it, for that matter. The May's are card caring members of the welfare state, promoter's of progressive government (a euphemism for intrusive government), but racist? Why? Because they expose people like Chris Williams?

Nonetheless, individuals like Williams are the byproducts of the government the May's promote. Maybe one day they will understand. Until then, we must deal with their schizophrenia.

Because Black people don't read the Independent and follow the Independent's lead we are not are dummies. Black people know their History and what they need to do to survive in this racist community. As for as the Bloggers with negative comment, you need to have the courage to identify yourself and that includes men. Negative comments about our leaders

---------------------------

Obviously, you don't read the Independent. Vitter does not meet the Ind's ideals, and for that matter, mine too. Unfortunately, you don't always get what you want, an inherent problem in a Republic, but it's better than all others.

All who are writing in against this paper is the racist and the ones who do not get it. You voted in a criminal. You voted against the other candidate because of his skin color. You are the racist. Get off you dam high horse and look at yourself in the mirror. You will never leave where you are because you can't. Uneducated and do not want to be educated. You blame everyone but yourself. It is your fault. You are the racist and the criminals. You need to go to confession and ask for forgiveness. Shame on all of you for casting stones. Now you have Brandon for four more years. He was all over the district for the past few weeks. Where is he now. Gone with the wind. And that is how it will be. Those projects that he said he did were never his and he knows it. Brandon didn't do shit for the district and will not this term either. But stay tuned. Because there is more of his drama coming in the very near future. He will not last the full term based on his personal life. He needed this job to pay for baby mama drama. See if you would go to school so you can read the paper you would have know this and voted the right way.
