Aguillard withdraws from LPSS super search

St. Mary Parish Superintendent of Schools Donald Aguillard, one of the top three candidates for Lafayette Parish schools superintendent, has withdrawn from the selection process.

In an email sent at 8:30 Tuesday morning to LPSS Marketing Director Angie Simoneaux, Aguillard says he has decided to stay in St. Mary Parish due to the support from the St. Mary Parish community and its desire for him to remain as superintendent.

“After solemn reflection, I determined that continuing the work in this district more closely aligns to my personal career goals of leading schools to realizing their academic potential,” Aguillard says in the email. “We started this undertaking in St. Mary seven years ago, and I am highly invested in continuing on the path to make this district a leader of educational growth in Louisiana. We have built a strong team of educated professionals and I have every confidence in our ability to succeed in attaining a significantly higher district performance score.”

School board member Mark Cockerham says he’s unsure at this point what the board plans to do with Aguillard’s news. The board had already outlined its travel plans to the communities of the top three candidates, including a visit to St. Mary Parish on Dec. 1. The latest timeline approved by the board calls for a final decision on Lafayette’s new superintendent by Dec. 14.

“I’d rather just go with the remaining two candidates,” Cockerham says. “But I know some board members might want to throw a third name in there, and they’d probably want Katie Landry [Lafayette Parish deputy superintendent].”

Simoneaux was not immediately available for comment Tuesday morning.

The two remaining candidates are Dr. Pat Cooper, who heads an early learning center in New Orleans, and Walter Gonsoulin, assistant superintendent of the Starkville School District in Mississippi.

Check back with The Ind for updates as the story develops.

Or perhaps Agguilard was Negotiating for something with St Mary school board. Ya don't want to tell your boss "I'll quit if you don't give me blank". But if you SHOW him you MIGHT quit, he gets the exact same message and you never said it.....wise advice from an old man that I've used myself twice.

Mr. Agguilard demonstrates himself to be an untrustworthy man. Not much integrity in that man. He should never have applied, started the process much less allow it to go this far, if he was just playing a political game. St. Mary isn't in as good a positon as they might think. This man isn't serious about education, only his retirement package.

"This man isn't serious about education"

None of these people are serious about education. Can you name someone who is really serious about educating kids that isn't actually teaching them in a classroom? These are career "administrators". Bureaucrats.

Beasley's comments in TDA article are confusing....Aguillard is viewed as an "insider" but Katie Landry is not? Katie's entire employment experience is with the LPSS. Beasley voted for Katie in each ballot.
I am certain Babineaux, School Board president, attorney and professional hypnotist will come up with a solution to this new dilemma. It would be funny if our children's education were not at stake. It seems the LPSB is again, our major problem with hiring a new superintendent. Been there, done that, we got Easton.

No, it is not bs! It is the way the LPSB?LPSS does "bidness", everyday, all day long! Could be the reason our scores are stagnant, candidates withdraw, facilities crumble....but if you ask Babineaux, School Board President, attorney, professional hypnotist, he will tell you it is the fault of the voters.

Disgusted, Aguillard isn't playing politics. That's the game being played by the LPSS school board. It's a tragedy with what he brings to the table that things have turned out the way they have. The gains made in St. Mary are evidence of Dr. Aguillard's ability as instructional leader and academic specialist. It would behoove LPSS to look for someone who can do the same for the students in Lafayette.

... like they did when Mr. Aguillard made the top three, and then he takes all his cookies and goes home??? He should never have entered the process. Its a lack of integrity and if its not politics in his own parish, a ploy to gain attention, to feather his nest there, then what is it. He should not be wasting people's time. No, I still believe Mr. Agullard "isn't all that" and demonstrates lack of character.

Wasting time goes to some members of the board. Beasely, for one, made it clear that he knows who he is voting for without the need for any interviews, visits, power points, or resumes.
I agree, "the fix was already in"

I agree with you on that. It's too bad school board presidents can't be chosen from the rank-and-file of the teachers. Unfortunately, just as with hospital directors, university presidents, the airline industries, even movie companies and the music industry, among other fields, the specialized "administrator" or "bureaucrat" has taken over the front office, and they rarely know anything about the business at hand or understand the troops in the field.
